To listen while you drive, walk or work, just access the episode through a free podcast app on your mobile phone.

The list is not ranked, so #1 is not better than #5. And of course the list is not impartial but personal. It is what a few of your fellow accountants think might benefit you most.

2020

You can find the 2020 list in ep 213. There are some really outstanding podcasts. With one exception (#1) all of them are still around and going strong.

2021

The 2021 list starts with 5 accounting podcasts, then two podcasts about economics and finances, one podcast about Australian politics, one about financial fraud and then at the very end one podcast just for fun to have a really good laugh – hopefully.

# 1 Talking Numbers

Talking numbers is hosted by Paul Jansz. In talking numbers Paul interviews specialists mainly around practice management, processes and tech.

In this episode we share two soundbites with you to entice your appetite for more.

# 2 Transform Your Profits

When you hear the intro to this podcast, you might get the completely wrong idea. This podcast is actually very different to the American hyper voice you hear in the intro.

Transform your profits is hosted by Reza Hooda, a UK based mentor and coach for accountants. And Reza has a very different style to what the intro to his podcast might suggest.

Reza runs his interviews as webinars where his students can send questions in. In this episode we give you a cut from his interview with Carl Reader of D & T Chartered Accountants in the UK.

# 3 CPA Podcast

The CPA podcast is run by CPA Australia – obviously. The hosts vary and usually work for CPA Australia or are partners with CPA Australia.

Different hosts with a different experience gives the podcast a different perspective – which is good.

In this episode we give you a short cut from a recent interview about e-invoicing and then a longer cut from an interview with Bernard Salt.

# 4 Growing Your Firm

Growing your firm is a US American podcast hosted by David Cristello, the CEO and founder of Jetpack Workflow.

David interviews accounting practices about how they run their practices, how they price their products and – in general – how they grow their firm.

We play you a cut from an interview with Theresa Slack, the co-principal of Financly Bookkeeping Solutions in Canada. Theresa and her sister have found a niche in ecommerce bookkeeping.

Theresa and David mention Mark Wichersham a few times. Mark Wichersham is a profit improvement expert in the accounting community and has written a number of books that are doing well on Amazon.

Theresa also mentions the pure bookkeeping system. You have probably heard of the e-myth by Michael Gerber. The pure bookkeeping system is putting those ideas into practice for bookkeeping and accounting firms. So it is a system of best practice operating procedures that you receive help to adopt when you join.

# 5 The Future Firm Podcast

The Future Firm Accounting Podcast is the fifth and last accounting podcast in our list for 2021.

The Future Firm Accounting Podcast – a bit of an awkward name – is quiet, calm and incredibly concise – packed with great advice. While the first 4 accounting podcasts are interview based, this podcast is just a scripted monologue. But very, very to the point.

The host is Ryan Lazanis, an innovative technologist and accountant, based in Montreal in Canada. So this is a Canadian podcast.

The episodes are only 5 to 10 minutes long but each of them well worth re-listening several times to really capture everything.

We will play you a cut from the episode titled “How much automation does your firm need”.

# 6 The Money

So now we leave the accounting podcasts behind and venture beyond accounting into the wider world of economics, politics and society. The Money is an ABC podcast. Superbly presented by Richard Aedy

The money is really well done, but the best thing is that it is Australian. It looks at issues in Australia and global developments affecting Australia. It looks at the world from down-under, through our eyes and not American or British.

# 7 Planet Money

Planet Money is an excellent podcast that gives you easy to understand answers to questions around economics, finances, money and their impacts on the world we live in.

It is well researched, well scripted and superbly produced with sound effects, music beds and many different voices that make it interesting to listen.

To give you a taste we will play you cuts from two different episodes. We start with a cut from the episode titled “The Stolen Company”. And then play you a cut from the episode titled “After the plague.”

# 8 The Party Room

This is an Australian podcast about Australian politics. It is fast, interesting and highly relevant.

The episodes pick up current developments that of course constantly change. So the content has a very short shelf life. So rather than going back in episodes, just listen to The Party Room as it comes out.

# 9 Who the Hell is Hamish?

This is the last podcast in our list that has to do with money in some shape or form. It is an Australian podcast that will show you how easy it is to fall prey when you are vulnerable. Superbly presented by Greg Bearup.

When you start listening you will wonder how on earth this podcast is connected in any way to your work. How could this possibly relate to you and your clients? But it does.

When you have an SMSF you have more control but you are also a lot more vulnerable to dubious advisers. But it doesn’t just have to be an SMSF. It can also be money or wealth in general. Life has ups and downs for all of us – and sometimes we or you or any of us – sometimes you are vulnerable even though you might have money, assets or super.

And if you then meet the wrong people, you might not see through the stories and promises that are slowly wrapped around you. So learn more about the mind and workings behind financial fraud.

# 10 ABC Comedy Presents

And this last podcast is ABC Comedy Presents. It has nothing to do with your work. When you go through tough times – not trauma of course, just tough times – then having a good laugh can really lift you up.

Each episode is introduced by the comedian whose show you are going to hear.

We play you an excerpt from a show by David Quirk in ep 7 of ABC Comedy Presents.

Comedy is a personal thing – what we find funny, you might find plain boring. There is a different show and different comedian each month. So if you don’t really click with something this month, chances are you will with a different episode and a different comedian.
